I am writing to share an exciting and meaningful initiative I am taking part in this year called Socktober 2026, and to let you know how I am personally making a difference as a school student.
Socktober is a national campaign run by Catholic Mission that uses our love for soccer to kick goals for good. This year holds a very special meaning, as it marks the 100th anniversary of World Mission Sunday, under the theme "One in Christ, united in mission."
The primary goal of Socktober 2026 is to raise vital funds and awareness for vulnerable children and communities in Malawi, where many families struggle daily to access basic necessities like nutritious food, clean water, and a proper education.
As a student, I am actively engaging in this mission through a few hands-on activities:
  • The National Sockball Challenge: I am using my creativity to handcraft a functional soccer ball out of recycled materials, such as old socks, bubble wrap, and plastic bags. This reminds us of how children in developing countries make their own sports equipment out of necessity.
  • The Socktober Shootout: During Mission Week, I will be putting my handmade sockball to the test in a penalty-shootout fundraiser at school to help score goals against global poverty.
  • Advocacy & Fundraising: I am leading by example to start conversations in my community about global inequality, while raising funds that directly support life-changing education and feeding programs in Malawi.
By turning a simple pair of socks into a tool for change, my school and I are helping to give children in Malawi a brighter, fairer future.
